| Dear Sirs, It's been said and sometimes even written that when you think of Harleys or Bikers, you instantly go to the image of what people "THINK" a biker is. They aren't all tattoos, vulgar, disrespectful, dirty, mean, trashy, alcoholic the list goes on and on; 'cause unfortunately this is how society thinks we should view them, however one thing that they are, is amazing. Bottom-line, utterly amazing! What makes a biker? It' s not owning a bike, it's not wearing leather, it's not having tattos on your body that makes you a biker. It's what's in your heart. And the bikers I had the pleasure of meeting one weekend at a MDA Benefit, had the most gracious hearts I've ever seen. I am sure many are saying right now, "Wow, what a great bunch of guys". No, again, you're wrong on the image, it's what a great bunch of LADIES, yes LADIES! 'Ladies On Wheels' known as the 'LOW Riders'. While we had been planning this MDA benefit and decided to do a poker run for money, not one of us thought of a woman being on a bike, we all were talking like "yeah the men will do it, they love riding", boy talk about typecasting the bike riding industry just to males. These ladies are incredible, from the black leather vests, to the zebra scarfed cowboy hat, to the purple insignia on their "riding gear", to the smiles on their faces for being a part of a MDA Benefit! They went above and beyond and what was most enlightening was their presence. They carried themselves in such a dignified manner, never knew grace could look so amazing in leather, but these ladies did. Dressed in their vests, blue jeans and boots and a smile that would brighten any day, these ladies did what was asked, they rode, and they rode hard for MDA. These LOW Riders came into Duke's BBQ, hot, sweaty, laughing, smiling and greeting everyone. All eyes where on them cause all of us, like society, was amazed that we had actual women riders show up at our event! This was the greatest thing since sliced bread let me tell ya! I've had the pleasure of getting to keep in contact through my daughter. When my daughter saw them walking in she was amazed, and overly excited. You would have thought some mega celebrity just walked into the restaurant and well, in her eyes, 6 of them did. My daughter deals with life everyday and people typecasting her, she was born with a rare syndrome and doesn't have any hair, her teeth are gone due to the medicines but she stills smiles, her heart has a hole in it, however it fills up with joy every morning. Want to see courage? Come watch my daughter wake up every morning with a smile, when some of us don't want to smile nor get out of bed for anything at all. In that weekends event I learned something about bikers, male or female...When it comes to events that aid children, or aid in something they believe in, they give it their all. We automatically know that the Fire Dept. and the Police Organizations will help... but want something done for kids and you can count on every Harley or Biker Shop in the Austin area to assist. One of the riders named Vic won the poker hand, turned around on behalf of the Ladies On Wheels organization and donated it right back to MDA. They paid to ride in this run, they paid for their food and then they donated back the winnings that would have helped in the money they were out of pocket. However, unselfishly they gave all. I don't think there are enough words to express not only my gratitude from being a mother of a special needs child, to being a person who looked at bikers in a different light. I like the light I see them in now, it's so much brighter. So if you're driving around in Austin and you see these ladies on Harley's or bikes of any kind, and you look at their back and there is a Ladies On Wheels patch, give them a thumbs up, or a smile, the littlest amount of respect you show them, you'll recieve ten fold in the smile they give back. i know, I'm blessed looking at my daughter smile every time she talks about them. And that smile is one I never grow tired of seeing. Sincerely, Starr Lyn McAdams Mother, Wife and now, a new friend and fan of the LOW Riders |
